The strategy behind Ocean Vision Legal

Ocean Vision Legal sits in an unusual space. It is a specialist legal practice working to protect the Ocean, but it operates with the conviction and collaborative spirit more commonly associated with an environmental organisation. Defining how those two sides could coexist became central to the strategy behind its new identity.

Our starting point was a series of conversations with the OVL team. Different perspectives emerged, but they repeatedly converged around the same qualities. OVL needed to communicate genuine legal authority without becoming corporate or conventional. It needed to express its passion for the Ocean without slipping into performative activism. And as a global organisation working alongside communities and partners, it needed to demonstrate expertise without positioning itself as the hero of the story.

This distinction was important. OVL is not a broad environmental campaigning organisation, nor does it want to behave like a traditional law firm. Its role is much more specific: using deep legal knowledge strategically, choosing where intervention can have the greatest effect, and working in support of the wider Ocean rights movement. The ambition was to build a brand capable of expressing that expertise while retaining the integrity, kindness and humanity already embedded in the organisation.

We came to describe OVL as a group of elite legal experts with genuine environmental commitment and humanity. But within that definition was a productive tension. How should an organisation balance the advocacy and passion of its mission with the measured authority expected of a serious legal practice?

Advocacy with discipline

Rather than resolving that tension by moving towards one side or the other, we made it the foundation of the strategy. OVL could be passionate without being reactive, and formidable without being aggressive. Its advocacy could be disciplined and its activism precise. It could be fierce when necessary while remaining composed.

The aim was not to diminish the emotion behind OVL's work, but to give it greater force. There is confidence in an organisation that doesn't need to constantly announce its convictions. For OVL, those convictions are demonstrated through the work itself: carefully chosen interventions, legal expertise and meaningful action.

This gave us a clearer idea of the character the brand needed to embody. OVL could be authoritative without being detached, passionate without being performative and fearless without being reckless. The tension we had initially identified wasn't something that needed to be solved. It was what made OVL distinctive.

Deeply Formidable

This thinking led to the strategic idea Deeply Formidable. We began to think about OVL through the mindset of a shark: measured, intelligent and strategic. There is no unnecessary movement or performance. Instead, there is an underlying sense of capability — calm under pressure and formidable when action is required.

It became a useful metaphor for the kind of power OVL represents. The organisation does not need to perform outrage to demonstrate its commitment. It pursues impact through precision, moving with confidence, restraint and strategic force. Its fearlessness is grounded in expertise rather than recklessness, combining legal authority with deep respect for the Ocean and the communities connected to it.

There is also an intentional duality within the phrase itself. Deeply speaks to knowledge, compassion and an understanding of the interconnected systems surrounding the Ocean. Formidable speaks to the legal expertise and conviction required to challenge powerful organisations and turn obligation into action. Together, they gave us a strategic story that could hold both sides of OVL without compromising either.

Building a visual language around evidence

That positioning also gave us a way to move beyond the familiar visual languages of both environmental activism and corporate law. Our research brought together the structure and sophistication of editorial and institutional communication with the more tactile qualities of 1970s environmentalism. Alongside this was another idea that became increasingly important: building the case.

A legal case is constructed through relationships between pieces of evidence, people, places and events. The Ocean is similarly interconnected: a vast system in which actions in one place can have consequences somewhere else entirely. Thinking about the identity in this way allowed individual elements to operate as fragments of a larger whole, creating a visual language that could feel rigorous and structured without becoming cold or institutional.

Rather than relying on predictable imagery of the natural world, the identity could communicate the Ocean through information, evidence and connection. It allowed the visual system to reflect not only what OVL is protecting, but how the organisation actually works.

Protecting the unprotected

Ultimately, the strategy gave OVL a clearer way to express what it already was: a modern legal force that is globally minded, strategically fearless and emotionally intelligent.

The resulting identity doesn't ask OVL to choose between being a law firm and being mission-led. Instead, it makes that combination its greatest strength. Its authority comes not from hierarchy or convention, but from knowledge, conviction and the ability to act.

Because protecting the Ocean requires more than awareness or good intentions. It requires the ability to turn legal obligations into action, accountability and systemic change. For Ocean Vision Legal, being deeply committed and deeply formidable are not competing ideas. They are what make the organisation capable of doing the work.
